How to calculate reusable packaging cost per use
The reusable package price is only one input. A credible comparison includes annual uses, service life, return logistics, cleaning, loss and operational boundaries.

01
Use package uses as the denominator
Define how many package uses occur in the comparison period. A use should represent one completed packaging cycle under the same operational boundary for both alternatives.
02
Calculate single-use cost
Multiply the delivered single-use package cost by annual uses. Add disposal, storage, handling or damage costs when they are material and consistently measured.
03
Calculate reusable purchases
Divide annual package uses by conservative usable cycles and round up. Adjust for loss, non-return and reserve inventory. Do not use a maximum laboratory cycle count as the expected operating life without evidence.
04
Add recurring loop costs
Include empty return freight, sorting, cleaning, inspection, repair, storage, administration and repositioning. If foldability reduces return cube, use the actual transport model rather than a generic assumption.
05
Test sensitivity
Calculate optimistic, expected and conservative cases. Service life, loss rate and return cost often have more influence than the initial package price.
06
Confirm non-financial requirements
A lower estimated cost does not override product protection, food or medical controls, ESD requirements, ergonomics, space constraints or regulatory obligations.
This guide is general information. Final material, structure, cleaning, performance, compliance and acceptance criteria must be confirmed for the actual product, route and jurisdiction.
